How to improve the bonding of the overmolding product?
The overmolding is an industrial method in which a plastic material is coated on the surface or inside of another part made of different materials through injection molding. The effect of overmolding is similar to that of double color molding, but the cost is much lower than double color mold.
Generally, the main part of the overmold product is called the skeleton, and the skeleton material normally is ABS, PC, etc. and the coating material is always elastic resins like TPU, TPE.
So, how to improve the bonding effect between the two materials?
By arranging structures like undercut or threads on the surface of the skeleton, and letting these structures pull the resin material, further make sure the soft material can fit well on the skeleton.
Choose a material that has co-adhesion and mutual solubility with the frame material as the coating material.
Test the temperature range within which the skeleton material and coat material can achieve better bonding strength. In the later molding process, you can refer to this temperature and adjust the mold temperature accordingly.
Adjust the thickness of the coating layer by the actual function of this product. The suitable thickness can also improve the adhesion of the two materials.
