EDM, or electrical discharge machining, is a metalworking process that uses electric sparks to erode material away. It consists of a worktable, electrode, power supply, and control system.

EDM machine uses the electric discharge between two electrodes to erode material away. In the process, the tool electrode and workpiece are connected to the power supply’s two terminals and immersed in a dielectric fluid. When the gap between the electrodes reaches a certain distance, the pulse voltage applied to the electrodes will break down the dielectric fluid and create an electric spark. The electric spark concentrates a large amount of heat in the fine channel, the temperature can reach over 10, 000 degrees Celsius, and the pressure also change rapidly. As a result, the metal material on the working surface at this point will instantly melt and vaporize, then condense rapidly, form solid metal particles, and be carried away by the dielectric fluid. At this time, a small dent will be left on the surface of the workpiece, and the electric spark will pause briefly, and the dielectric fluid between the electrodes will return to an insulating state.

The advantages of EDM machines are:

1. High processing accuracy, capable of machining various complex shapes.

2. High processing efficiency, capable of machining deep holes, narrow slots.

3. Wide range of processing materials, capable of machining various conductive materials.

EDM machines are widely used in various industries, such as:

1. Mold manufacturing. EDM machines can be used to machine mold cavities and cores.

2. Precision parts processing. EDM machine can be used to machine various complex shapes of precision parts.

3. Electronic components processing. EDM machines can be used to machine electronic components.

EDM machines are an important processing equipment that plays an important role in modern industry.
