Processing Methods for Overmolding Molds
There are two primary methods for processing over-molding molds:
Two-Shot Injection Molding:
Hard Component Production: The first mold and injection machine are used to inject the hard material into the mold, creating the desired hard component.
Soft Component Production: The hard component is placed into the second mold. The second mold and injection machine are then used to inject the soft material into the hard component, creating a tight bond between the two materials and forming the over-molded product.
Two-Color Injection Molding:
Two-Color Mold Design: A two-color mold is designed according to the product's requirements. This type of mold typically consists of two or more cavities, each used for injecting a different color or material.
Mold Installation: The two-color mold is installed on the injection molding machine, and the mold's position and parameters are adjusted.
Injection Molding: Two different colors or materials are loaded into two or more hoppers of the injection molding machine. The injection molding machine's control system controls the injection sequence and timing of the two materials, allowing them to be injected into the two-color mold separately, forming the over-molded product.
Additional Considerations in Overmolding Mold Processing:
Material Selection: Choose suitable hard and soft materials based on the product's performance requirements and operating environment. Hard materials typically have high strength and hardness, while soft materials offer good flexibility and wear resistance.
Mold Design: The mold design should consider the shrinkage and bonding strength of both the hard and soft materials to ensure dimensional accuracy and appearance quality of the over-molded product.
