Reasons for blackening of injection mold sliders

11-07-2024

Maintaining injection molds is crucial for their proper functioning, during this process, it is common to see blackening and dirt accumulation on mold sliders, which can hinder maintenance efforts. Let's delve into the underlying causes of these issues.

During the injection molding process, mold sliders are in constant motion. The lubricant present in the slider grooves can volatilize over time, forming a sticky residue that attracts dirt and grime. Additionally, sliders are often placed near the venting areas of the mold cavity. As gases are released during the injection and filling stages, they can come into contact with the sliders, leading to corrosion and blackening.

Root causes analysis:

1. Plastic degradation. Plastic materials can decompose into low molecular weight polymers, which, when left for extended periods, solidify into dirt and grime.

2. Lubricants and additives. Lubricants and additives used in the injection molding process can contribute to the formation of dirt and grime. These additives can adhere to the sliders during the mass production stage.

3. Inefficient venting. Improper venting mechanisms within the plastic mold can lead to inefficient gas evacuation, resulting in the gradual accumulation of dirt and grime.

4. Low mold temperature. Low mold temperature can cause plastic decomposition products to condense on the sliders, forming a sticky residue.

5. Excessive injection speed. Rapid injection speeds can trap volatile gases within the mold, preventing their complete expulsion. Over time, these trapped gases can condense and form dirt.

Cleaning methods of blackened sliders:

1. Mold release agent. Apply mold release agent to the sliders and wipe them clean with a cloth.

2. Abrasive cleaners. Utilize abrasive cleaners to scrub the sliders and remove dirt.

3. Ultrasonic cleaning. Immerse the sliders in an ultrasonic cleaning solution and utilize ultrasonic waves to dislodge and remove dirt.
