Some tips for metal parts processing of insert molds
Insert mold is a tool for processing special-purpose plastic parts, and the material of inserts are varied, but mostly is metal. It should be noted that the metal parts should be processed by CNC or other methods before molding to make sure that the structure of the metal units are available for molding. So, what should be noticed when processing metal inserts?
1. Metal screws
Metal screws are the common types of inserts. Wrapping the screws in the plastic can improve the stability of the insert product. When the screw is used as an insert in the molding, special attention should be paid to the thread section. As we all known, the screw base needs to be embedded in the plastic, and the thread near the base must has a clear surface, and the diameter of the clear part should be slightly larger than the diameter of the threads. The clear bar on the screw is for sealing melted material, to ensure that the cavity of the insert is sealed well, and to avoid that the plastic material from being injected out of the mold through threads.
For round head screw, another tip should be mentioned is whether there is a cross structure on the base for the stability of the metal insert inside the plastic. Generally speaking, if there are is no cross structure on the head, we may meet slip of the inserts while using. Through the cross structure, we can lock the insert stably inside the plastic. For some screw with square hear or triangular head, we can proceed the molding directly.
2. Metal bar
Using a metal bar as the insert of the insert molding, we should pay attention to the slippage of the metal bars. When we order the metal bars from the supplier, we can ask the supplier to add some knurling on the bar where the joint part is to improve the friction between metal and plastic.
3. Nut
The nut is generally hexagonal, and the outer wall is smooth and clear, which can achieve the purpose of sealing well. Also, some nuts are inserted into the plastic by blanching technology, we should choose the suitable process by project requirements.
