What kind of steel is suitable for the requirements of the mold base?
The mold base is an important part of the injection mold, and its properties directly affect the service life of the mold. Therefore, the choice of steel for the mold base should be determined according to the applications and requirements of the mold.
Performance requirements of the mold base steel:
1. Good strength and toughness. The mold base needs to withstand huge loads during the injection molding process, so it must have sufficient strength and toughness to prevent deformation and fracture.
2. Good wear resistance. The mold base is in long-term contact with the mold components and is subjected to severe friction and wear, so it must have good wear resistance.
3. Good hardenability and machinability. The mold base generally needs to be quenched and tempered to improve its hardness and strength, so it should have good hardenability. In addition, the mold base also needs to be processed in various ways, so it should have good machinability.
Commonly used mold base steels:
Medium carbon structural steel: Medium carbon structural steel is inexpensive, has good processing performance, and is widely used in the bases of medium and small molds. Commonly used medium carbon structural steels include 45 steel, C45 steel, etc.
Quenched and tempered steel: Quenched and tempered steel has high strength and hardness and good wear resistance, and is suitable for the bases of large and complex molds. Commonly used quenched and tempered steels include 40CrMo, 42CrMo, etc.
Alloy steel: Alloy steel has higher strength, toughness, and wear resistance, and is suitable for the bases of high-precision, high-strength molds. Commonly used alloy steels include 4Cr5Mo, 9SiCrMo, etc.
Stainless steel: Stainless steel has good corrosion resistance and is suitable for the bases of molds for plastic products in corrosive media. Commonly used stainless steels include 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, etc.
