The Structure of the Side Core in Injection Molds
The side core in injection molds is a specialized mechanism designed for demolding. It is primarily used for complex plastic parts with side recesses or side protrusions. The side core structure plays a crucial role in mold design, effectively addressing challenges associated with side demolding.
1. Components of the Side Core
The side core typically consists of the following main components:
Side Core Insert: The part directly contacts the plastic piece and pushes it during demolding. Its shape is designed according to the side features of the plastic part.
Side Core Slider: Connects to the side core insert and works in conjunction with the angled guide pin to achieve lateral movement.
Angled Guide Pin: A fixed component that guides the motion path of the side core slider.
Guide Rail or Fixed Block: Secures the slider and ensures it moves along a designated trajectory.
Return Spring: Provides the restoring force for the side core during its reset.
2. Working Principle of the Side Core
When the mold opens, the angled guide pin, set at a fixed angle, pushes the side core slider to move laterally, allowing the side core insert to disengage from the side features of the plastic part. After demolding, the return spring or the mechanical action during mold closure resets the side core, preparing it for the next molding cycle.
3. Key Points in Side Core Design
Angled Guide Pin Angle: The angle is usually designed based on the demolding requirements of the plastic part, typically ranging from 15° to 25°. An angle that is too small may cause movement difficulties, while an overly large angle increases lateral force.
Slider and Guide Rail Compatibility: It is essential to ensure smooth slider movement without any jamming.
Strength Requirements: The materials for the side core insert and slider must meet strength and wear resistance requirements, often using high-strength steels like SKD61 or H13.
Lubrication Design: Incorporating lubrication structures at contact surfaces reduces wear and extends the lifespan of the side core.
4. Advantages of the Side Core
Benefits:
Suitable for plastic parts with complex structures, especially those with side holes or recesses.
Enhances demolding efficiency, reducing manual intervention.
High precision, making it ideal for automated production processes.
